Work is either fun or drudgery. It depends on your attitude. I like fun.

I Like Fun.

Today's Marketing Cookie is about creating fun.

Maya Angelou once said, "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." I agree. I've learned that fun is not had; it is created. A person could be brought through the wondrous gates of enchantment at Disney World, surrounded by puppies, laughing children, beautiful flowers, and candy canes—and still be a miserable jerk. Even with all the happiness and glee to be found in the world, a person may still find a way to ferment their frown, refuse such fun, and choose to spread nasty pouts all about.

It works this way at work.

Your attitude sets the tone for everyone around you. If you often play the role of "Debbie Downer" at work, you will set a trend of negativity that will follow you around the office like a dark, troubled cloud. Even if you have a sudden change of heart, one day of smiles may make for a nice change in weather, but will have little impact unless your attitude is consistently positive. Having a great attitude is not a personality trait. No, I believe it is a personal commitment. Fun is a commitment that every one of us has the tools required to create—if we aren't already too hardened and grouchy.

I encourage you to adjust your attitude and be the creator of fun in your workplace. Winston Churchill was spot on when he said, "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." You'll be amazed at the impact you will have on other people over time. Yes! It may take more than one chuckle, a nice wave, or a single grin. Depending on how much of a troll you've been, it may take a lot more. I'm not talking about a freak occurrence of fun here, like constant sunshine would be in Seattle. No way! I am talking about sustained sunny happiness that radiates out from your cubicle like a floodlight, and makes a positive change to the culture in your company.

...and so I ask:

Will you find a way to celebrate small successes, or amplify disappointments? Will you create fun where there is none, or make sure every frown stays pointed down? Will you bring happiness to the chair where gloom once sat, or just be the one who likes to complain about this or that? As today's fortune says, "Work is either fun or drudgery. It depends on your attitude."

I like fun. How about you?
